“Armadillo” means “little armored one”.

There are 21 different species, ranging in size from a mere 6 inches to a whopping 5 feet long! Their shell-like armor is made of solid bone, and an extension of their skeleton, which protects them from predators. While some species can roll into a hard armored ball, others simply burrow quickly to hide their soft underbellies in the ground, leaving only their shells visible, giving them the appearance of rocks.

Curiously, nine-banded armadillos (like this one), are the only known animal that gives birth to identical quadruplets every time! It’s extremely rare, and still a mystery as to why.
