Snails are classified as invertebrates: animals without a spine or backbone. Interestingly, their ancestors are one of the earliest known species of animal in the world.

Their most noticeable, striking feature is, of course, their spiral shell, which protects their organs.

But did you know that snails can be ‘right’ or ‘left-handed’? Their shell spiral will either develop clockwise or counterclockwise. This determines the direction their organs will face, and has resulted in the evolution of new species of snails!
