Moths are masters of camouflage. Their unique markings not only allow them to blend in with their surroundings, but many can appear to be other animals completely – such as markings that look just like the eyes of a larger animal on their wings, which they use to scare off predators.

The reason moths are attracted to lights is because they are nocturnal creatures who evolved to orient themselves by the light of the moon. Their eyes are naturally attuned to dim light, so the brightness of artificial lights or flames draws them in because it over-stimulates and actually disorients them.
